The DROPS awareness and prevention course is designed to raise awareness of dropped-object prevention across all industries, not just the oil and gas industry. 

Dropped objects are not a minor problem. They are a serious workplace hazard. A small item falling from height can injure or kill a person below, damage a plant, interrupt work, and lead to expensive delays and investigations. 

The Training focuses strongly on the basics of dropped-object hazard identification, risk assessment, and effective risk management.

In dropped object prevention work, the term typically refers to any item that falls from its previous position and has the potential to cause injury, death, or damage. Industry guidance commonly classifies these events as static or dynamic dropped objects. A static dropped object falls mainly because of gravity and failure over time, such as corrosion, vibration, poor fixing, or poor maintenance. A dynamic dropped object falls because force has been applied, such as collision, snagging, motion, manual handling, or severe weather.

This course is intended for people new to the subject and for those who already work with heights, tools, structures, lifting operations, or maintenance tasks. It explains the risk in plain terms, then shows how to assess it, inspect for it, control it, and respond properly when something goes wrong.

The course is based on lessons learned from Industry and DROPS incidents and associated global best practices. The training is suitable for offshore and onshore industries and captures best-practice techniques from around the world.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, the learner should understand the danger created by dropped objects and the harm they can cause to workers, visitors, equipment, and operations. The learner should also be able to recognise the common causes of dropped object incidents, apply sensible controls before work starts, understand how inspection and maintenance reduce risk, and explain how safe work practices, reliable securing, and correct reporting help prevent recurrence.

This training program comes with a competency test at the end of the course, with a minimum pass rate of 70%, and the certificate is valid for two years
