The North Sea giant oil platform, Ninian North has arrived in Shetland for decommissioning onboard one of the world’s largest ships, the Pioneering Spirit.

The top structure of the Ninian Northern platform was taken to Lerwick by the Pioneering Spirit, then transferred to a barge. The former oil platform topside will be broken up at a new heavy duty decommissioning facility, achieving a 97% recycling rate of the platform.

The platform was installed in 1978 and started producing in 1980, reaching a peak of 90,000 barrels a day but the operator Canadian Natural Resources, ceased production at the Ninian Northern field, 100 miles north east of Shetland, in 2017.

The topside structure, weighing 14,200 tonnes, was lifted from its steel legs by the Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest construction ship, and was sailed to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.

The Ninian North was one of the largest offshore structures in the North sea and its removal brings about the end of a gold era, having worked on this platform with Loffland Brothers it brings fond memories back of those days and the contribution it made to this country’s wealth and future.

How many other constructions can achieve the wealth that this platform generated, then be recycled at an impressive 97% rate.
