Volunteer in AstraZeneca coronavirus clinical trial dies!
A Brazilian volunteer in the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trial has died, health officials announced Wednesday.
The Brazil National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) said it was notified Monday of the participant’s death and received data from the investigation into the matter.
The Federal University of Sao Paulo, which is helping coordinate phase 3 clinical trials in the country, also confirmed the death.
The patient was identified as Joao Pedro Feitosa, a 28-year-old doctor in Rio de Janeiro who had been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brazilian outlet O Globo reported.
The outlet reported that the volunteer had been given a placebo and not the trial vaccine, citing unnamed sources, but this was not confirmed by AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca declined to comment on the case, citing medical confidentiality.
But the drug giant confirmed plans to keep testing and said “all required review processes have been followed.”
“All significant medical events are carefully assessed by trial investigators, an independent safety monitoring committee and the regulatory authorities,” the company said.
“These assessments have not led to any concerns about continuation of the ongoing study.”
Oxford University, which is developing the vaccine with AstraZeneca, also confirmed “there have been no concerns about safety of the clinical trial” after reviewing the case in Brazil.
“The independent review in addition to the Brazilian regulator have recommended that the trial should continue,” Oxford spokesperson Alexander Buxton told one news channel.
The trial previously faced a setback in September when one of the participants in the United Kingdom suffered an adverse reaction, prompting the company to temporarily pause the trials.
This is the same trial that the UK government has agreed to purchase 100 million vaccines, somehow it does not make you feel very safe.
Personally I wont be accepting this vaccine given the tiny .4% percentage of dying if contracted.
